Shimla : Two interns of a medical college here were Friday suspended for allegedly ragging and manhandling a first-year student, the incident coming close on the heels of a 19-year-old medical student losing his life to the scourge.
Two MBBS interns – Nikhil Verma and Sushant Sharma – of the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) were suspended from their internship for misbehaving with a junior Thursday night after consuming alcohol, said college principal Surinder Kashyap.
“A first-year student lodged a complaint with the hostel warden last (Thursday) night that he was ragged and manhandled by two senior interns in the college under the influence of liquor. We summoned both the parties (the complainant and the accused students) today morning and found them (the interns) guilty,” Kashyap told IANS.
He said the interns have been suspended from the internship for six months, expelled from the hostel and slapped with a fine of Rs.1,000. No police case has, however, been registered against them.
State Health Minister Rajeev Bindal said: “The disciplinary action committee of the college probed the complaint and took action on the basis of its investigation”.
Ironically, the state cabinet Friday approved the draft of the anti-ragging ordinance. Under the proposed law, ragging has been made a non-bailable offence that could attract a maximum sentence of three years’ jail and a fine up to Rs.25,000.
The new case of ragging comes just weeks after Aman Kachru, a first-year student of the Rajendra Prasad Medical College at Tanda town, died after he was beaten up in the name of ragging allegedly by four final-year students.
