One killed in Haryana police firing

Chandigarh : At least one person was killed and another injured when police opened fire on protesters in a village in Karnal district of Haryana Friday.

The villagers were protesting police inaction to trace a missing girl when things took a violent turn. The protesters blocked a highway, clashed with the police and tried to set a bus on fire. The police first cane charged them and later opened fire to disperse the mob at Karnal, 150 km from here.

The person killed was identified as Sukhchain Singh.

The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) demanded imposition of President’s rule in Haryana saying the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government had failed to maintain law and order.

INLD general secretary Ajay Singh Chautala said the police firing showed that people in the state were not safe.
