Dhaka to import 60,000 tonnes of wheat from India

Dhaka : Bangladesh is to import 60,000 tonnes of wheat from India to meet its domestic demand.

It has selected two private firms, an Indian and a local, to carry out the task estimated at Taka 863 million ($1.3 million).

Chaired by Finance Minister A.M.A. Muhith, the government’s cabinet committee on purchase Sunday approved the proposal, The Daily Star said Monday.

Two firms – India’s LMJ and Bangladesh’s Anwar Trading – were selected to make the bulk import of the food-grain for supplying to the Food Directorate, a cabinet division official announced.

India is one of the major suppliers of foodgrains to its immediate neighbour Bangladesh.

It sold 400,000 tonnes of rice in 2008 after Bangladesh experienced severe shortage in the wake of a cyclone that hit in November 2007.
