Dictatorship cycle must come to an end: Zardari

By Xinhua,

Islamabad : Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari Monday said “for a long time and at intervals the rule of law and constitutionalism has been trampled by dictators”, adding “this cycle must come to an end”.

The Pakistani government last Monday announced the restoration of deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, sacked by former president Pervez Musharraf in 2007 emergency rule, following protests from lawyers and activists.

“For a long time and at intervals the rule of law and constitutionalism has been trampled by dictators, sometimes under the doctrine of necessity and sometimes under the theory of successful revolution. This cycle must come to an end,” said Zardari in his message on the occasion of Pakistan Day.

“The restoration recently of the deposed Judges has raised the expectations of the people to witness an end to this cycle,” the president said.

“On this day let us all resolve that we shall endeavour to uphold the constitution, rule of law and work for the emancipation of the people. I hope that towards this end all institutions of the state will work in harmony,” Zardari said.

Pakistan is celebrating Pakistan Day Monday, the 69th anniversary marking the passing of a historic resolution seeking independence from colonial rule.

On March 23, 1940, All India Muslim League adopted Lahore Resolution, which later came to be known as Pakistan Resolution, resolving to work for an independent Muslim state.

The adoption of the resolution is considered as a milestone in the history of Pakistan movement.
