Congress, Trinamool exhort workers to keep aside differences

By IANS,

Kolkata : After days of rumblings among the grassroot workers of the Congress and Trinamool Congress about the alliance between the two parties, leaders of both outfits Tuesday called for a united effort to defeat the state’s Communist-led Left Front in the Lok Sabha polls.

“I know there is discontent among Congress workers who feel our party has got fewer number of seats than it deserves. Similarly, a section of Trinamool activists are unhappy that Congress candidates are fighting from areas where Trinamool has its own MLAs,” state Congress working president Subrata Mukherjee said at a party conference here.

“This is not the time for all this. The need of the hour is to fight the election unitedly and defeat the Left Front. If we do not rise up to the occasion, history will not pardon us,” Mukherjee said.

Trinamool Congress heavyweight and leader of the opposition in the state assembly Partha Chattopadhyay, who also spoke at the Congress function, alleged that the CPI-M was badmouthing the alliance as it was unnerved.

“The CPI-M is scared of this Congress-Trinamool alliance. So they are constantly terming this pact as an ‘unholy nexus’.”
