Markets give up gains, close lower

Mumbai : Indian equities markets gave up their day’s gains to end Tuesday marginally in the red, with a key index ending trade 0.23 percent lower than its previous close.

The 30-scrip Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index (Sensex), which opened at 9,549.52 points, closed at 9,402.64 points (provisional), slipping a marginal 0.23 percent or 21.38 points from its previous close.

The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 9,699 points, a rise of almost 3 percent from its last closing figure.

Similarly, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) lost 0.83 percent from its last close to shut shop at 2,915.55 points.

The BSE midcap index ended 0.83 percent lower, while the BSE smallcap index was down 0.89 percent.
