Islamabad : At least 45 people were killed and dozens injured when a suicide blast ripped through a crowded mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s Khyber tribal region along the Afghan border, officials said.
The bombing in Bagiari village of the Khyber tribal district in north-western Pakistan demolished the two-storeyed building.
“A bomber who was on foot blew himself up when the people were offering Friday prayers,” said civil administrator Tariq Hayat Khan.
“So far we have pulled out 45 bodies. The number of deaths could be as high as 70 to 80 because more people are buried under the rubble,” Khan said, adding that up to 80 people were wounded in the blast.
According to the official, up to 300 people were present in the mosque when the bombing occurred.
