India are trailing by 134 runs after being asked to follow-on.
Rahul Dravid was the only batsman to be dismissed in the session after scoring a patient 62.
Gautam Gambhir (83) and Sachin Tendulkar (9) were at the crease.
New Zealand scored 619 in the first innings and bowled India out for 305 to take a lead of 314 runs.
