Impossible to fight ‘US imperialism without Congress’: Left leader

By IANS,

Kolkata : It is not possible to fight American imperialism without the Congress, declared maverick Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Subhas Chakraborty here Monday.

In an interview to a private television news channel Star Ananda, Chakraborty expressed his reservation about the CPI-M’s decision to rope in the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in a secular formation like Third Front after he had supped with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for 11 long years.

“Even the other day he was in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). How can he be acceptable in the fight against the BJP,” said Chakraborty, a member of the CPI-M state secretariat.

Describing US imperialism as the biggest threat to the world, Chakraborty said the Congress was traditionally the biggest anti-imperialist force in the country.

“I don’t think we (Leftitsts) will get any other party which is even comparable to the Congress in this regard. Without the Congress, it is not possible to fight imperialism,” said the West Bengal transport and sports minister, adding that his party viewed the BJP as a bigger enemy than the Congress.

He also said the Third Front has not taken shape as visualised by the party.

Chakraborty said it would have been better had the party joined the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2004.
