Kolkata : Alleging rigging and intimidation by West Bengal’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) cadres in the final phase of polls, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said the Marxists “did not have faith in the common people”.
“A person who serves as the election agent of the chief minister (Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee) is indulging in rigging. Our supporters are not being allowed to vote,” Banerjee told reporters at her Kalighat residence in the southern part of the city.
Citing instances, Banerjee said the CPI-M cadres were giving proxy votes. “Genuine voters, on finding their votes had already been cast, asked that they be allowed to tender votes. But even that was not allowed,” she fumed.
“Aren’t you people ashamed by the way you are conducting the polls with your cadres? Don’t you have faith in the decision of the common people?” Banerjee asked the Marxist leaders, demanding the resignation of Bhattacharjee.
Banerjee has kept herself confined to her ‘election control room’ at her residence through the day. She herself is a candidate Wednesday, at the Kolkata South constituency.
