Dancing to the tunes of drums and raising the party’s ‘Jai ho’ election slogan, Congress workers were bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets to celebrate the unexpected performance of the party in Uttar Pradesh.

“We have been beating drums since 3 p.m. soon after we came to know that our party was leading in nearly 22 constituencies in the state,” Mohan Vishwakrama, a party worker, told IANS.

State Congress party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, despite her own defeat in Lucknow seat, did not miss to participate in the celebrations.

“It’s the time to celebrate as we have made a comeback that has surprised all political outfits,” said Rita.

The Congress made a surprise comeback in Uttar Pradesh winning 22 seats, while the Samajwadi Party won 23, and the state’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged 19 seats.

In a stark contrast of the upbeat mood at the Congress party, offices of the Samajwadi Party, BSP and BJP were completely devoid of hustle and bustle.

While the main entrance door of the BJP building was locked, the offices of the Samajwadi Party and the BSP were closed by 5 p.m.
