Congress on comeback trail in Uttar Pradesh, wins 21 seats

Lucknow : The Congress made a surprise comeback in Uttar Pradesh, winning 21 seats, while the Samajwadi Party won 23, and the state’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged 20 seats as the Lok Sabha elections results were declared Saturday.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal of Ajit Singh managed four seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BSP) 10 seats. Rebel BJP leader Kalyan Singh who contested as an independent won. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh Singh won in the two constituencies he contested.

In the 2004 elections, the Congress had won only nine of the state’s 80 seats.
