Congress workers celebrate outside CPI-M office in Delhi

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) headquarters in the national capital wore a deserted look when the counting of votes began Saturday. But suddenly it erupted in celebrations – not by the party workers but Congress supporters!

The reason – supporters of New Delhi Congress candidate Ajay Maken, whose counting centre was near the CPI-M office in Gole market, had to gather at the Left party office – thanks to police barricades.

Maken’s supporters broke into celebrations outside the counting centre as early trends projected him leading in the constituency. However, the police barricaded the area and dispersed them.

The supporters then danced to drums beats, held party flags and marched towards the CPI-M office, just a few yards from the counting centre.

“Maken-ji is leading by huge numbers and we are here to celebrate his victory. Congress will sweep Delhi and other states,” said an ecstatic Himanshu Khurwal, a party worker.

Said Balwant Sharma, another Congress worker: “We are planning to take out a padyatra (march) with Maken-ji from here to his constituency. We want to thank people for their support and Congress jubilant victory in Delhi.”

The presence of Congress workers outside the CPI-M office surprised many onlookers.

“I was surprised seeing Congress workers celebrating outside the CPI-M office. Later I came to know that they moved here following police barricade,” said Rahul Singh, a passerby.
