Durga, 39, died in his sleep in his Bokaro home Thursday.

“Massive intra cranial haemorrhage leading to brain strain caused the death of Durga Soren,” said Pramod Kumar, civil surgeon of Bokaro Sadar Hospital. A three-member team conducted the autopsy at the hospital Friday morning.

According to police sources, Durga, who was not well for last few days, suffered an injury to the back of his head.

“Durga’s wife said that he got up at 3 a.m. on Thursday and went to the bathroom. While going to the bathroom he fell and sustained injuries on the back of his head,” said a police source.

Durga’s death in his sleep led to many rumours about the real cause of the death. Different reports speculated many reasons like heart attack and kidney failure.

When Durga died, his father Shibu Soren and younger brother Hemant were in Delhi to attend a United Progressive Alliance meeting.

Durga’s death comes at a time when Soren has had a string of personal losses and setbacks. Soren had to quit as chief minister after he lost an assembly by-poll in January. He lost his younger brother the same month. He also underwent by-pass surgery a few weeks back and did not take active part in the election campaign.

Durga was a legislator twice between 1995 to 2005. He is survived by wife and three daughters. The last rites took place at his native village Nemra of Ramgarh district Friday afternoon.
