New Delhi: In a clear move to bring the entire Muslim minority in Bihar in its fold, the ruling Janata Dal (United) today demanded immediate implementation of the Sachar Committee report and Scheduled Caste status for Muslim and Christian Dalits.
At the end of the national executive meet in Delhi, the party passed a political resolution. The resolution reads: “It is unfortunate that the recommendations of the Sachar Committee have yet not been implemented. JD(U) demands that these recommendations are immediately implemented. Not only Dalit Muslims but Dalit Christians be also given SC status.”
JD-U is a key ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. Soon after the recent Lok Sabha elections were over in Bihar, JD-U leader and state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had shared dias and clasped hands with Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, for which he was heavily criticized by the minorities as well as his party leaders. The latest move of the party could be seen as a damage control and an effort to pull the remaining ground from underneath the RJD of Lalu Prasad and LJP of Ram Vilas Paswan. RJD, which had 22 MPs in the last Lok Sabha, was reduced to only 4-MP party while Paswan lost his own seat, not to talk of other candidates of his party.
