BSP leads in eight of 11 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats

By IANS,

Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tuesday appeared to be heading towards victory in at least eight of the 11 state assembly seats that saw by-polls last week. The lone Lok Sabha by-election in Ferozabad seemed to be tilting towards the Congress.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had failed to take a lead on any of the seats so far.

According to trends available with state election officials, Congress candidate Raj Babbar was marching ahead of his closest rival Dimple Yadav of the SP by a margin of 4,000 votes in the Ferozabad parliamentary constituency.

In the Lucknow (West) assembly seat, the Congress was ahead of the BJP with the SP at number three and the BSP trailing at fourth position.

In Jhansi, a BSP rebel was marching ahead of the official ruling party candidate by a margin of 3,000 votes.

However, BSP was way ahead of its rivals in eight of the other constituencies for which by-elections were held Nov 7. These included Mulayam Singh Yadav’s strongholds Etawah and Bhartana.
