Lucknow : A police constable posted at the residence of a district judge in Muzzafarnagar in Uttar Pradesh shot himself, officials said Wednesday.
Constable Hakim Singh was posted at the residence of district judge Anant Kumar since Nov 11.
“The incident took place around 12 Tuesday night when Singh, who was on guard duty, shot himself in his chest with the .303 Service rifle. No suicide note was recovered and he died while being taken to Meerut for treatment,” inspector Rajiv Sirohi of the Civil Lines police station told IANS over phone.
According to Singh’s colleagues, he was depressed since his posting in Muzzafarnagar.
“He (Singh) was posted in Firozabad and was transferred here Nov 11. However, he made all possible efforts to get his transfer cancelled as his brother was seriously ill in Firozabad and was undergoing treatment,” a policeman, preferring anonymity, told IANS.
Singh fired from point blank at his chest and died soon, police said.
Muzzafarnagar is about 400 km from Lucknow.
