Kochi: Arrests are continuing in Kasargod, the northern-most district of the state, where two people were killed in police firing and violence on November 15. Three more persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Muslim League activist Azhar. The two persons arrested by the police on Sunday have been remanded by the court.
The police have reportedly found out the knife used to stab Azhar from the house of the first accused Ramesh. Azhar was stabbed to death by a group of about ten when he was returning home after the public meeting of the Muslim League held in Kasargod city. Azhar and two friends were asked their names and then attacked by the group. The injured friends were admitted to hospital. The attack took place on the road and many people witnessed it, reportedly.
Violence erupted in Kasargod when a group of people clashed with the police after the public meeting organised by the district Muslim League committee to honour the party’s state leaders. The police initially broke tear gas shells and lathicharged the mob. And then they fired at the people. It is reported that SP Ramdas Pothen fired at Shafeek, a Muslim League activist, who died at once. Azhar was killed outside the city centre.
The government has ordered judicial probe into the violence and police firing. The United Democratic Front, of which the Muslim league is a party, has demanded that the SP be changed but the government does not seem to accept the demand. The Home Minister and the SP maintain that the firing was inevitable. Whereas, the UDF says that things could have been brought under control even otherwise. The UDF has also demanded that a case of murder be charged on the SP.
