Ranchi: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Jharkhand unit Sunday staged a demonstration in front of the Governor’s House here, demanding early elections to the state assembly.
Thousands of BJP workers, holding banners and cut-outs, joined in the party’s “Raj Bhavan gherao” programme, expressing their unhappiness over the worsening law and order situation in the state, rising prices of essential commodities and other grievances.
BJP state unit president Raghubar Das, former chief minister Arjun Munda, party MPs from the state and senior journalist and former Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra also took part in the demonstration.
“What form of government is this where no one is secure. Maoists are on the rampage, killing innocent people and police officers. The poor people are neglected. The situation has worsened during president’s rule in the state. Why is the central government headed by the Congress not holding elections in the state?” Das demanded to know.
In his speech, Munda accused the Congress of ruling the state by proxy and alleged that Jharkhand has been pushed back on every front and people are facing the “gravest situation”.
Heavy security arrangements were made at the Governor’s House, in view of the agitation and the approaches to all its the four gates were barricaded to stop the BJP agitators away.
