Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will join the international community to mark the World Food Day Friday, WAM news agency reported.
This year’s theme – “Achieving food security in times of crisis” – is a true reflection of the deep worry about the world food security, which is under threat from disasters and other factors.
The global financial crisis has exposed the status of food security in most countries.
The crisis has added over 100 million people to the legion of those suffering from malnutrition, representing over one billion people, the report said.
Environment Minister Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad said low farm output, rapid increase in population, water scarcity, low investment in agricultural, development and research, have compounded the problem.
These factors would not allow the world to achieve its goals to reduce the number of hungry people by half by 2015, he added.
