Punjab plans evening courts to clear backlog of cases

Chandigarh: In view of nearly 700,000 pending cases in various courts under its jurisdiction, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Monday announced that evening courts would be started shortly in Punjab to lessen the pendency of cases.

Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur said in Muktsar town, 250 km from here, that in the first phase evening courts would start functioning in important cities of Punjab.

Thakur inaugurated the new judicial complex in Muktsar, built at a cost of Rs.21 crore.

The chief justice said that the high court planned to start village courts to solve petty cases. Such courts would be set up at block level. He added that in the first phase, these courts would start functioning as a pilot project in four blocks.
