Srinagar: Following orders from Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, authorities Tuesday released senior separatist leader Shabir Shah.
Shah, chairman of separatist Democratic Freedom Party, had been detained under the Public Safety Act and had remained under detention for many months.
A government press release here said following improvement in the overall security situation and in line with the government’s policy to release separatist leaders, the chief minister ordered revocation of the PSA under which Shah had been detained.
Shah’s release also comes days after the visit of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram to the state, during which he said the central government was working on “quiet diplomacy to achieve a unique, honourable and acceptable solution to the problem in Jammu and Kashmir”.
