ASEAN launches Human Rights Commission

Cha-Am, Hua Hin, Thailand : The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) adopted on Friday the Cha-am Hua Hin Declaration launching the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

The declaration emphasizes the commitment of ASEAN member-states to the promotion and protection of human rights in the region.

Some US$ 200,000 will be provided by ASEAN leaders as seed capital for AICHR during its first year of operation.

Additional funds will be provided by ASEAN member-states and other external sources.

In addition, ASEAN leaders also announced their commitment to review the terms of reference (ToR) of the AICHR every five years to further strengthen the body.

Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva urged member-states to support AICHR and remain vigilant in safeguarding against human rights violations and in providing assistance to victims.

The Thai Prime Minister also announced the completion of the ToR of the ASEAN Commission on the Rights of Women and Children which would be established next year under the umbrella of AICHR.

Prior to the inauguration ceremony of the AICHR, there were informal meetings with representatives from the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN Youths, and ASEAN Civil Society.

An exhibition of water color paintings on “ASEAN: Portrait of a Community” at the Royal Dusit Grand Hall of the Dusit Thani Hotel was also opened Friday.

The 15th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits formally opened on Friday here.

A cultural performance by the Bunditpatanasilpa Institute, which documents ASEAN development, was presented during the opening.
