Lucknow : A teacher was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district on charges of abducting a school girl, and police say that the accused has “admitted” to exploiting several minor girls in the recent years.
Kevin Oscar Steel, 33, a music teacher in a Gorakhpur school, has been charged for kidnapping a Class 7 girl of same school. According to police, the girl went missing Aug 15 and a criminal complaint naming Steel as the abductor was lodged by her parents.
“After kidnapping the girl, he first went to Mau and then to Varanasi (both in Uttar Pradesh). He finally reached Jalpaiguri (in West Bengal) and after a few days sent the girl back to Gorakhpur. We arrested him as soon as he reached here Friday,” aAdditional Superintendent of Police Samar Bahadur Singh told IANS Monday.
The girl’s medical examination report is not available yet and so charges of sexual exploitation cannot be confirmed against Steel, the official added.
“During interrogation he has confessed to exploiting over half a dozen minor girls in the past few years,” Singh said.
Singh said that Steel was earlier arrested on similar charges of kidnapping a school girl in 2003 in the neighbouring Maharajganj district.
“An expert musician and singer, Steel came to Maharajganj from Kolkata in 2003 and joined as a music teacher in an inter college. However, within a month he kidnapped a girl and was missing for over 15 days, following which an FIR (first information report) was lodged by the parents and he was arrested. However, he got bail within two months and reached Gorakhpur,” Singh said.
Interrogations revealed that Steel married a Christian girl in Gorakhpur and also had two children with her. However, he continued changing schools in the same district and the police now suspect that he committed similar crimes in every school where he taught.
