Owing to the strong opposition of the varsity students, police managed to arrest only two of the 12 students who have been booked for Wednesday’s vandalism on the campus.

While carrying out their protests against the arrest, several varsity students held a demonstration on the campus.

“We could only arrest Akhilesh Yadav and Samrat Kumar, the others are yet to be nabbed. After deploying a large contingent of police on the campus, we will arrest the other students,” Superintendent of Police Awadesh Kumar Vijeta said.

On Wednesday, demanding restoration of the students’ union polls in the Allahabad University, some students went on a rampage, attacking public transport and clashing with police, officials said.

Police assaulted students with batons as they tried to enter the vice-chancellor’s office on the varsity campus.

For the last two years, the Allahabad University has not conducted the students’ union polls on the plea that the elections would vitiate the academic atmosphere on the campus.

Allahabad is about 200 km from Lucknow.
