By IANS,

Kolkata : One man was shot dead and another injured by suspected Maoist rebels Sunday evening in West Bengal’s trouble-hit Binpur region, police said.

A group of 15 people shot Nazrul Hassan, 28, at Andharia Bazar in Maoist-affected West Midnapore district, police said.

“One person was killed and another seriously injured in that attack. Hassan died on the spot but his companion, Bapi Pratihar, was admitted to the Jhargram sub-divisional hospital with two bullet injuries,” West Midnapore district superintendent M.K. Verma told IANS.

He said the attackers shouted some slogans after killing Hassan and fled the spot.

According to police sources, Hassan had a small shoe store at Andharia Bazar and he was known to be a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist.

“We’ve started an investigation whether the miscreants were Maoists or other anti-social elements,” Verma said, adding so far no arrests have been made.
