“(The) Congress party would like to condemn the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s statement where she has openly, in a manner, called for civil war,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.

Tewari also said: “Such a statement mocks the Constitution, challenges the Supreme Court and sends a message that the chief minister does not believe in rule of law.”

He said Mayawati had used a language that was tantamount to contempt of court. “I am sure, Supreme Court will take due notice.”

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister Thursday warned that if the monuments and memorial sites dedicated to the Bahujan Samaj Party icons were demolished, a serious law and order situation would arise in the country.

President’s Rule would have to be imposed, she had said. “The Congress and the Samajwadi Party would be responsible for this.”

The Supreme Court had earlier this month ordered a halt to construction of statues dedicated to Chief Minister Mayawati, her mentor Kanshi Ram and party symbol across Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow and other places.
