Five swine flu deaths take India’s toll to 238

New Delhi : At least five people died of swine flu Saturday, taking India’s influenza A (H1N1) toll to 238, health authorities said.

Four deaths were in Maharashtra that leads the toll in the country. With these deaths, the state’s toll has reached 101.

Two people died in Andhra Pradesh but the lab report of one of them is awaited, officials said. With this the death toll in Andhra Pradesh has gone up to 18.

Besides, 298 fresh cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious virus to 7,672.

Of the fresh cases, 116 were from the national capital. Delhi has thus reported 1,741 swine flu cases so far and stands second only to Maharashtra, where 58 new cases took the total number to 2,342.

Other states from where new cases were reported are Tamil Nadu (32), Andhra Pradesh (23), Karnataka (21), Kerala (20), Haryana (16), Gujarat (5) and Uttar Pradesh (7).

Out of the 298 cases reported during the day, three are imported cases and the rest are indigenous, the health ministry said.
