The accident took place in the Gulariya locality at around 6 a.m. Sunday when the jeep, in which the 11 students were travelling, collided with a truck.

“It appears that the front axles of the truck broke and it hit the jeep head on. Two boys, two girls and the driver died on the spot and seven other children are injured,” Deputy Inspector General of Police (Gorakhpur), Anand Swaroop, told IANS over phone.

All the children were studying in the Navodaya Vidyalaya in the neighbouring Maharajganj district and were coming home to celebrate the Dussehra festival.

“Out of the seven injured children, four have head injuries and are serious,” A.K. Srivastava, a doctor at the hospital where the children are being treated said.

“The driver of the truck is absconding and we are trying to nab him,” Swaroop added.
