Couple booked in Chandigarh for attempting suicide

By IANS,

Chandigarh: Police Tuesday registered a case against a middle-aged couple here for attempting to commit suicide by swallowing some poisonous substance.

A police official said Varinder Jain and his wife Shashi Jain, who run a departmental store in Sector 19 and stay in a flat above the shop, were booked for attempting suicide by eating a poisonous substance, probably sulfas tablets.

Police took the couple to the government hospital in Sector 32 from where the couple’s relatives took them to a private hospital in the neighbouring town Mohali where doctors stated that their condition is serious.

According to police sources, Jain had taken a loan of Rs.30 million (Rs.3 crore) from a nationalised bank but was facing difficulty in returning the installments, due to which he was disturbed for the last few days.

“We were shocked when we come to know about this incident. Jain was also planning to auction his shop to raise money to pay back the bank loan,” a neighbouring shopkeeper and friend of Jain told IANS, requesting he not be identified.
