Washington : More than 88,000 children in the US were deprived of both or either of their parents who have been deported from the country over the last 10 years, said a study.
The study conducted by the University of California (UC) in Berkley revealed that the authorities deported 88,000 parents during a period between 1997 and 2007 after a drastic revision of migratory laws in 1996.
The report titled “In the best interest of the children” said a majority of these deportations were the result of minor crimes and many of those deported had permanent residence permissions or green cards, Prensa Latina reported.
In the absence of parents, the minors grow up with various psychological problems related to behaviour and learning, it said.
More than 12 million people staying in the US without proper documents have been asking the government to legalise their residential status.
