Easter celebrated in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram : Christians made a beeline to the churches in Kerala early Sunday to celebrate Easter, signifying the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the cross, and take part in the mass before the onset of sunshine.

The Easter mass came to a close before sunrise in most churches with the serving of a piece of cake, made of egg and milk, by the priests.

On Easter, especially in Christian strongholds of Kerala, families come together to celebrate the most important event of the day – the traditional Easter breakfast.

The traditional ‘appam’ made of rice powder and fresh toddy or yeast is the main meal on the breakfast table. The other delicacies include baked bananas, egg curry and the more popular stew made with either mutton, chicken and beef.

The rise in the prices of Easter items like chicken, mutton and other items have failed to dim the celebrations as people were seen preparing and eating elaborate meals.

Also, long queues were seen in front of the shops of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation Saturday as the shops opened after two dry days.

Christians account for 23 percent of the 3.20 crore population in Kerala.
