Mumbai: The Oberoi Group Monday announced the reopening of the Oberoi Hotel here April 24 – exactly 17 months after the Nov 26, 2008, Mumbai terror attack.
The adjoining hotel, the Trident, which had sustained less damage, was reopened Dec 21, 2008, barely a month after the terror attack, a spokesperson for the hotel told IANS.
“The entire hotel has been completely transformed to offer fresh contemporary interiors, new facilities and latest technology. All the guest rooms have been renovated and include spacious marble bathrooms, besides other changes, starting from the lobby onwards,” the spokesperson said.
New dining and wining options have also been created for the reopening.
For instance, the erstwhile Kandahar restaurant, specialising in north-west frontier cuisine, will become Ziya, an Indian speciality restaurant. It will be under the direction of the Michelin starred chef Vineet Bhatia, who specialises in blending north Indian food with south Indian influences.
Tiffin, an all-day restaurant, will offer a similar concept under a new name, Fenix, while Vetro, the renowned Italian restaurant, will continue with the same name but under a different chef.
Certain other surprises have been also lined up for the re-opening of the hotel – built in 1986 – but the spokesperson declined to disclose these.
In view of the tragedy that had struck the tragedy claiming 166 lives, the management has decided to make it a low-key affair with just an in-house ribbon cutting ceremony sans fanfare.
The Oberoi and the Trident, both stand adjacent to each other at Nariman Point in south Mumbai, offering a magnificent view of the Arabian Sea, the Queen’s Necklace and the Malabar Hill.
