Kuwaiti wins Gulf poetry contest

Abu Dhabi : A Kuwaiti poet has pipped 47 others from across the Gulf region to win the $1.3 million dialect poetry contest held here.

Nasser Bin Thouani Al Ajami won the title of Nabati poetry’s “Million’s Poet” and also the grand prize of five million Arab Emirates dirham ($1.36 million) here Wednesday.

Another Kuwaiti poet, Fallah Al Moragi came second while Saudi poet Hissa Helal came third.

The show was produced by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and included performances by 48 poets, selected by a panel of experts on ‘Nabati’ (dialect) poetry.

The participants were selected from thousands of applicants after a six-week tour of the Gulf countries, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

They were judged by the jury, the live audience and SMS voting.
