The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said 521 people were injured in the clashes.

The situation seemed to be getting out of control as the “red-shirt” protesters and security forces started to exchange fire and grenades at Khokwua intersection, 700 mertres away from the site of a major rally in Phan Fah Bridge, where at least 10 soldiers were injured, it said.

The injured were shifted to hospital.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had declared a state of emergency in Bangkok and in the adjoining areas Wednesday to control the rioters.
