New Delhi: The Delhi cabinet Monday approved a bill for setting up Delhi Urban Mass Transit Authority (DUMTA), an agency for integrated handling of transport related issues.
“There is no coordination between agency responsible for constructing and managing road network, traffic police and transport department as the former two do not come under Delhi government. This is affecting the transport sector which is quite crucial for the residents in the city,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters after the cabinet meeting.
Dikshit said that to overcome the major deficiency Home Minister P. Chidambaram has asked her to constitute an authority for integrated handling of all transport related issues.
“Accordingly a bill to provide for setting up of DUMTA for comprehensive planning, development and regulation of integrated multi-modal public transport for sustainable public transport in the capital was drafted which received cabinet’s nod today (Monday),” she said.
