10 injured in Kashmir clashes

Srinagar : Ten people, including five policemen, were injured as protestors clashed with the security forces Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town, police said.

The protests started after a youth drowned in Jhelum river Tuesday. Locals alleged that Zubar-ul-Hassan Bhat had jumped into the river after being chased by police during clashes in the town.

Muntazer Bashir, a Class 11 student, was critically injured Wednesday after being hit on the head by a tear gas shell, police said.

Clashes erupted early Wednesday morning after slogan shouting and stone pelting mobs took to streets.

Police fired warning shots and repeatedly fired tear gas shells to control the mob.

Late Tuesday, two paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were wounded in a grenade explosion.
