New Delhi : A major fire that broke out early Wednesday in a plastic scrap market of west Delhi’s Mundka area for the third time in the past four days was triggered “deliberately by miscreants”, an official said.
“This is the third such fire incident to have happened in a scrap yard within the last four days. No cause of fire could be traced. We suspect these fires to be set deliberately by miscreants,” Delhi Fire Services director R.C. Sharma told IANS.
The fire broke out around 4 a.m. Wednesday in the plastic scrap market in Mundka area near Phirni road here. About 30 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the flames were doused after three hours.
Sharma said two warehouses were gutted and scrap worth crores of rupees destroyed.
“A similar fire incident took place in the same market last (Tuesday) evening. We had sent eight fire tenders. Fire cannot jump from one place to another that too in different areas of the scrap yard. Some miscreants are behind these fire incidents,” he said.
The Delhi Police should keep a strict vigil to prevent such incidents in future, he added.
On Sunday, a fire erupted in the same market and destroyed scrap worth crores of rupees.
A major fire also broke out in a container depot in south Delhi Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Tughlakabad Saturday. Of the 25 warehouses which store goods worth crores of rupees, 24 were gutted out.
“The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has also given helping hand to Delhi Fire Services by providing 20 tanks of water to douse the fire in Mundka scrap yard,” a DMRC spokesperson said.
