Patna: While Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is trying to ride on much-hyped ‘Bihar Shining’ wave, a report of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has just come out to take the air out of the wave: Bihar tops the country in family suicide cases. According to the data for 2008, the highest number (102) of family suicide cases that year was reported from Bihar. This is 35 % of total 289 such cases reported from across the country.
Out of 102 suicide cases from Bihar, there were 66 women, 36 men and 44 minor girls as suicide victims.
Rajasthan is at second number in this list with 86 cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 40 such cases.
The report revealed that every year more than 1.25 lakh people commit suicide in the country while almost four lakh people attempt to suicide. The rate of suicide in the country is 10.8%. In this list, West Bengal has highest number in overall suicide cases while Bihar is on top in family suicide cases.
