Two Orissa towns record 46 degrees-plus temperature

Bhubaneswar: Two towns in Orissa recorded maximum temperatures over 46 degrees Celsius Monday as the heat wave continued to grip the state, officials said.

The industrial town of Talcher in Angul district, some 169 km from here, recorded a maximum of 46.2 degrees Celsius – the state’s highest temperature of the day, an official of the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre told IANS.

The district headquarters of Jharsuguda, another industrial town, 376 km from here, recorded 46.1 degrees Celsius.

High temperatures were also recorded in several other places, mostly in western Orissa, with Sambalpur recording 45.6 degrees, Hirakud 45.4, Sundergarh 45.0, and Bolangir 44.6 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Bhubaneswar and its nearby Cuttack town, however, remained slightly cooler at 38.5 and 37.4 degrees Celsius, respectively, he said, adding that the heat wave condition would continue to prevail over some parts of the state Tuesday too.

An official of the state revenue control room said the state government has confirmed at least six deaths so far in the state due to sunstroke.
