The bodies were found in the Bhalukbasa forest, considered a den of the leftwing extremists, police said.

“We suspect they were killed by the Maoists,” said state Inspector General of Police, Zulfiqar Hassan.

The third victim was a potato dealer who had been abducted by the Maoists last year.

“He had been taken away by the radicals last year. And the other two bodies are of local CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) activists,” said Hasan.

Maoist ultras are active in West Bengal’s three western districts – Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore.

The joint forces, comprising personnel from central paramilitary forces and state armed police, have been conducting an operation to flush out Maoists from West Midnapore district’s Lalgarh belt since June last year.
