Kolkata Police step up security, send SMSes for alert

Kolkata : A day after police officers warned about the terror group Indian Mujaheedin’s plans to carry out subversive activities in the city, the Kolkata Police issued advertisements in the dailies and SMSes Friday to alert the city-dwellers.

In an advertisement in leading dailies, Kolkata Police said: “Dial 100 or 1090 to inform police about any unclaimed bag, vehicle, two-wheeler or bicycle that you suspect might contain explosives.”

“Keep local police station informed about the new tenants or call Lalbazar control room.”

In an SMS alert, police said: “Do not touch any unidentified object. Inform anything suspicious on 100/1090. You are the eyes and the ears of our city. Help KP (Kolkata Police) in keeping Kolkata safe.”

The city police have beefed up security in all the major establishments in the city like Howrah Bridge, Dum Dum Airport and the Calcutta Metro Stations.

The Lalbazar police control room has convened an emergency meeting with managers of shopping malls to discuss security matters.

Security has also been stepped up in markets and crowded places.
