New Delhi : Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) received Rs.28,876 crore (about $6 billion) from foreign donors between 2005 and 2008, parliament was told Wednesday.
In a written reply to BJP’s Ramdas Agarwal, Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran said in the Rajya Sabha that Rs.9,663 crore donation was received by 18,796 NGOs across the country in 2007-08 while Rs.11,337 crore was received by 18,996 NGOs in 2006-07.
The minister said 18,570 NGOs got Rs.7,878 crore in 2005-06.
Following complaints, 41 NGOs have been prohibited from receiving foreign aid, he added.
Among the states and the union territories, Delhi with 1,181 NGOs got the highest amount of foreign donations of Rs.1,717 crore, the minister said. Tamil Nadu was second with Rs.1,671 crore foreign donations.
Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which received Rs.2.82 crore through 13 NGOs, was the lowest recipient.
