RTI activist Subhash Agarwal filed a query with the parliamentary affairs ministry seeking details about the criteria for selection of best parliamentarian awarded every year.

“There is no age limit for selecting the best parliamentarian but a member who receives the award once is not entitled to receive it again. Besides other things like experience, knowledge, awareness are some of the points taken into account while deciding it,” said the reply from the ministry.

The RTI revealed that Swaraj, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was the youngest to have received the award at the age of 52.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram, former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chaterjee are among others to have received the award.
