13 doctors punished for violating medical ethics

New Delhi : As many as 13 medical practitioners have been punished for violating medical ethics till July this year, the Lok Sabha was informed Friday.

In a written statement, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said: “Government received complaints regarding violation of medical ethics by the medical practitioners from time to time.”

The complaints were then forwarded to Medical Council of India, apex body that regulates medical education in India, for appropriate action under the Indian Medical Council (Professional conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, he said.

In 2007, out of 557 complaints received, 41 medical practitioners were punished while in 2008, complaints received were 499 and 11 medical practitioners were punished. In 2009, six medical practitioners were punished whereas the complaints received were 610, the minister informed.
