Berlin mayor condemns firebombing of Iran Culture Center

By IRNA,

Berlin : German Mayor Klaus Wowereit here on Thursday condemned the arson attack on the Iranian Islamic Culture Center, the daily Der Tagesspiegel reported.

Reacting to this firebombing and five previous arson attacks against mosques in Berlin since June, Wowereit expressed hope that police could arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

Meanwhile, the intelligence unit of police has reportedly launched its investigation of the case.

The attack on the Iranian Islamic Culture Center early Thursday morning has shocked Berlin’s large Muslim community.

An incendiary device was thrown at the exterior walls of the Islamic culture center, located in Berlin’s Tempelhof neighborhood.

Nearby residents alarmed police after witnessing flames several meters high.

Meanwhile, an informed source told IRNA, there was no one inside the culture center at the time of the assault, except the custodian of the building.

The source added the objective of the attack was to toss the incendiary device into the building.

Berlin security officials have condemned the arson attack and vowed to boost security at the community center, according to the source.

The German capital has been the scene of repeated arson assaults against mosques in recent weeks.

A few days earlier, the Al-Nur Mosque became the target of an arson attack in the capital’s pre-dominantly Muslim district of Neukoelln.

The Sehitlik Mosque, Berlin biggest mosque, has been attacked four times this year with firebombs.
