The two sides at the 11th annual bilateral summit adopted a joint resolution in which they said that India and EU recognize “the important implications of the movement of people for India and EU”.

Leaders of the two sides agreed “to explore initiatives that could lead to a regular, comprehensive and structured dialogue on migration issues, with a view to deepening cooperation in this field”, the resolution said.

“Both sides reiterated their joint commitment to the (UN) millennium development goals (MDGs), with an emphasis on health and education and a special focus on vocational training.

“In this context, EU and India will sign the next joint development cooperation strategy (Multi-Annual Indicative Programme 2011-13),” it said.

Adopted by world leaders in 2000, the millennium development goals provide concrete, numerical benchmarks for tackling extreme poverty in its many dimensions.

Set to be achieved by 2015, the MDGs also provide a framework for the entire international community to work together towards making sure that human development reaches everyone.

If these goals are achieved, world poverty will be cut by half.
