Court orders Brazilian magnate’s arrest

By IANS/EFE,

Brasilia : A Brazilian court ordered the arrest of transportation mogul Constantino “Nene” de Oliveira in connection with a 2008 attempt on the life of his former son-in-law, a judicial spokesperson said.

Oliveira, 79, is a founding partner of Brazil’s No. 2 airline, Gol, and owns the ground transport giant Planeta.

He is accused of a role in the attempted murder of Eduardo de Queiroz.

Oliveira was informed of the charge while answering questions from a judge in Taguatinga, 30 km from Brasilia, about the 2001 slaying of an activist who led an occupation of one of the magnate’s properties in the Brazilian capital.

Marcio Leonardo de Sousa Brito was gunned down in December 2001.

Though the cases are unrelated, the judge in Taguatinga postponed to next March his decision on whether the charge that Oliveira ordered Brito killed will go before a jury.
