New Delhi : Congress president Sonia Gandhi Sunday said the objective of the 83rd plenary held here was to “introspect” and added that a ‘chintan shivir’ or a brainstorming session would be held in the coming months.
Addressing thousands of party workers in Burari in northwest Delhi, Sonia Gandhi said the party has to carry forward the legacy handed over by its past leaders.
“Today we are concluding 125 years of our party. For the last one decade, our party has seen many victories and defeats, we have faced lots of challenges…To face the future, we have to show a strong will power. We can look back at our past proudly. We have been very fortunate.
“But it is also important that we do lots of introspection to carry on with the legacy. This is the objective of the plenary,” she said.
In her speech, Sonia Gandhi named the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and P.V. Narasimha Rao.
She said that the party had held brainstorming sessions at Pachmarhi and Shimla to re-assess the party’s position on critical issues.
“I firmly believe that we must periodically introspect together, and if necessary, reassess our position on critical issues to keep pace with the times. That is why in the past we held the Pachmarhi Vichar Manthan Shivir and the Shimla Chintan Shivir. In the coming months, we will hold a similar conclave,” Gandhi said.
“It will be an occasion to hear the voices of our colleagues, particularly younger ones, to bring new energy to our thinking,” she added.
