Corruption not confined to politics, says Agatha Sangma

Shillong: Corruption is not confined to India’s political system alone, Agatha K. Sangma, the youngest minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet, said Monday.

“There is lot of cynicism amongst people towards politicians that all of them are corrupt. That’s not true. Corruption is not confined to politics. It has entered various other aspects of life in the country,” Sangma, minister of state for rural development, told journalists.

The people and the media are more vigilant these days and none can escape after committing something wrong, she said.

“People are more aware of their rights and therefore wrongdoings are being increasingly brought to public domain,” Sangma, daughter of Nationalist Congress Party leader and former speaker Purno A. Sangma, added.

Noting that people can remove corruption, the NCP parliamentarian cited the example of Bihar, where she said people voted for a person who has brought changes into their lives.

“One man (Chief Minister Nitish Kumar) changed the entire system and improved Bihar. That’s why people voted for him. He performed exceedingly well,” she said.
